For country food done right, check out The Purple Place in El Dorado Hills California. The Purple Place, El Dorado Hills CA

In El Dorado Hills, there's a restaurant and bar that has been a landmark for over 50 years: the Purple Place. Once known as a roadhouse, it has evolved into a family establishment with the motto, "Country food done right."

Okay, let's talk about that unique color first. Legend has it that the original owner of the Purple Place was a worker on the Folsom Dam project in 1955 and had access to "spare parts" and "excess materials." He used them to build a bar. When it came time to paint it, there was, apparently, a lot of paint that just happened to be lying around, so he mixed it together and came up with "this god awful color" purple.

The locals quickly identified with it, and when a subsequent owner repainted the place green, there was such uproar that he went back to purple. In late 2002, the restaurant was bought by Matt Luther. Luther is a French-trained chef who was the executive chef at the Sheraton (now Sacramento Marriott).

The Purple Place, El Dorado Hills CASays Luther, "I told everyone this was an old-fashioned place; don't fight it. They served classic American food, and we wanted to continue with that." He did, however, make some changes; "I got rid of the hydrogenated oil and now we use only peanut oil in the fryers." He also made other healthful changes.  "I eat at my own restaurant and know quite a bit about nutrition. I make the food the way I want to eat it. For instance, our beef is all USDA Choice and most of it is Black Angus."

The dining room at the Purple Place specializes in huge burgers, steaks and ribs, and a green chili. Luther enjoys cooking food the average American family likes, and provides a place with a lot of character to make you feel welcome. People around El Dorado Hills know that the restaurant with the unique color is a place where they will find great food and service, plus friendly waitresses and bartenders.  It really is country food done right! The Purple Place, El Dorado Hills CA

Have you seen this video? Talk about teamwork!

Have you seen this video?  This shows the value of teamwork and following an established plan.  This is a Japanese band who recruited some of their fans with webcams, gave them insturctions, and then they put all the webcam videos together in a mosaic.  People are linking arms and doing all sorts of things without ever seeing each other.  Very clever, and it took them about 3 months to stitch the videos all together.

So whether or not you love the music, I think you will enjoy the video.

Computers are great, until they're not!

You may have heard about this on the news:

A New Hampshire man says he swiped his debit card at a gas station to buy a pack of cigarettes and was charged over 23 quadrillion dollars.

Josh Muszynski checked his account online a few hours later and saw the 17-digit number - a stunning $23,148,855,308,184,500 (twenty-three quadrillion, one hundred forty-eight trillion, eight hundred fifty-five billion, three hundred eight million, one hundred eighty-four thousand, five hundred dollars).

Muszynski says he spent two hours on the phone with Bank of America trying to sort out the string of numbers and the $15 overdraft fee.

The bank corrected the error the next day.money

***

This reminds me of something that happened to me years ago.  I had made a large deposit in my checking account, and paid a few bills, but nothing very large.  Two days later, I got a call from the bank notifying me that I was more than $4,000 overdrawn and they had bounced three checks I had written!  I called them to remind them of the large deposit, and they told me I was overdrawn including the deposit.  They only laughed when I told them they had made a mistake.

I headed to the bank, and wound up spending two full days going through their records (they told me they "didn't have time"), and found out that the machine that entered transactions had stuck somehow after my account number was entered, and more than 30 transactions that followed - both deposits and withdrawals - were all posted to my account.

By the end of the second day, I had found enough errors to get within $27 of what my records showed.  I demanded that they write letters of apology to the creditors to whom my checks had been returned.  I told them I'd stay and wait while they wrote them.  Once I had them in my purse, I closed my account and told them they could keep the $27 - I just couldn't spend any more time trying to get any closer.

That $23 quadrillion figure could be 5 or 6 transaction amounts that all got stuck together somehow.  Or some mischievous gremlins in the computer!  Or someone trying to get him to quit smoking?  Or ....?
