Come to the Fair Oaks Chicken Festival for great family fun!

It’s time again for the annual Fair Oaks Chicken Festival!  If you Fair Oaks Chicken Festivalhave ever been to the Village area of Fair Oaks California, you have seen the feral chickens who wander the neighborhood. And as you know, chickens have the right of way in Fair Oaks – and they don’t use crosswalks, so please drive carefully.

Once a year we have a big festival in the Village to celebrate our famous chickens, who have been written up in national magazines, covered by television news teams, and loved by the residents of our town.  No one knows for sure how they came to be there a very long time ago – there are always several versions circulating – but there are dozens of varieties, including some very unusual ones.

If you will be anywhere near Fair Oaks Village on Saturday, September 17, 2011, stop by the Chicken Festival and join in the fun from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. It’s a one day event with free admission and free parking, and Fair Oaks chickenslast year there were over 15,000 celebrants attending.

A few of the activities and offerings will be craft booths, food vendors, microbrew area with beer tasting, kids park and games, bands playing some great music, dancing in the street all in the Plaza Park area and along Fair Oaks Blvd.

Also, an old fashioned country breakfast at 8:00 that morning at the Fair Oaks Inflatables at Village Park in Fair OaksCommunity Center Clubhouse that sits between Plaza Park and Village Park, in the Village ($5 per person at the door), and plenty more things for everyone to enjoy.

You can also name the new Chicken Mascot, and if your name is chosen, you will win a prize.

The bands that will be playing (Music to Soothe the Savage Chickens) are some local favorites:

10:00-11:30   Lightning Hand BandCraft and food booths at the Chicken Festival

Noon-1:30     Hired Guns

2:00-4:00      Mumbo Gumbo

4:30-6:00      Endangered Souls

Although admission to the Festival is free, there will be
kids' games, lots of inflatables and face painting in Village Park (which adjoins Plaza Park), and for just $5, a child will receive an unlimited wristband that includes it all.

Parking is easy.  The best place to park is at the parking lot at the southwest corner of Sunrise Blvd and Winding Way, at the Scandinavian Designs store.  From there, just walk across Sunrise to Plaza Park.

For more information, you can contact the Fair Oaks Parks and Recreation Dept. at (916) 966-1036.

I hope to see you there!

Hi Scott - The photos I posted are from last year, but I'm hoping to get some good ones this year and maybe even a video.

Susan - This certainly sounds like a novel festival.  Hope you all have a "quaking" good time and post some great photos.

I have never been to the Chicken Festival Susan but I have been in this area and experienced the wild chickens that roam the area. The readers need to know that this is not a farm land area. Residential homes, apartments, and regular city life here - just with chickens.

I was once pumping gas a few years ago at the ARCO station Sunrise, I think it is a Valero now. Minding my own business, a chicken walk up to me and pecked me in the leg. I nearly screamed. Where am I that chicken roam the public places? It was the weirdest experience that day.

Tom - You're so funny.  I never thought we had "attack chickens" and I want to know what you did to upset the poor little thing.  ;)
